To the outside observer, Talanoa Hufanga appeared to play the best all-around game of his career in Week 1, when he was flying all over the field for a team-high 11 tackles, two in the backfield and also grabbed an interception. But he got a bit greedy at times and the Bears were able to take advantage in a 19-10 win.
As Hufanga explained to 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” Wednesday, he thought he could have performed better in the season opener. Check out his full interview below:
“Honestly, I didn’t think I played that well,” Hufanga said. “Any time they score, I wanna put it on me, whether or not it’s my job or not, I would love to put the touchdowns on me. I’m the last line of defense as a safety. For us as a defense, we wanna hold each opponent to zero points. … From an individual standpoint, I’m not satisfied with a game like that when we don’t win. Just gotta continue to work. Continue to be a sponge and learn from the older guys, the coaches and continue to go out there and prove what the Niners defense is all about.”
Despite the disappointing defeat, Hufanga is staying positive.
"It’s not a loss, it’s a lesson," Hufanga said.
Hufanga is eager to see how fellow 2021 draft pick Trey Lance responds in Week 2 against the Seahawks.
"He's incredible, just being around him and seeing the way he holds himself, his work ethic," Hufanga said. "We're excited for him, especially Week 2."
