49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks spoke to the media for the first time since the failed blitz call that has become the primary topic of discussion among media and fans this week aside from Brock Purdy's injury status.

“I know there's a lot of questions about the call right before the half. So I definitely want to address that before I move on to Cincinnati," Wilks told reporters Thursday afternoon.

"I take full responsibility for that call. I have to do a better job in putting the guys in a better position. We have good players, I know that and can't really press the issue. And with that, moving forward it's my responsibility to do that. So I wish I could take it back. But again, I got to do better."

Shanahan was noticeably upset over the play when he was asked about it in his postgame press conference on Monday.

The head coach then doubled down on his disdain for the timing of the call again at his Wednesday press conference.

“Yeah he knows, you guys I think talk to him tomorrow, he knows he messed up on that call. I have no problem with zero blitzes, especially when people need a lot of yards. If you need to get 20 yards to kick a field goal, I have no problem with a zero blitz. But I do when there's 16 seconds left. That's where he lost track. There was no necessary need for that just because of the time. I have no problem with that play call, but when it's that time you can't do that. That's not an option.”

The 49ers defense is coming off two uncharacteristic performances in Cleveland and Minnesota and will look to bounce back at home against the Bengals on Sunday afternoon.
