Kings vs. Lakers Preview – By the Numbers

This Kings team feels different. After a resilient and hard-fought win against the league leading Cavaliers, the Kings host the Lakers and look to make it two in a row. This is the type of game that makes Kings fans extremely nervous. In past years after a big win, the Kings would come out and have a poor performance against teams in the bottom of the standings, especially when their star players are out. With LeBron out tonight, the Kings have to come into this one with a sense of purpose, and show their growth in this regard.

The Lakers, sitting at 2-9, are owners of the league’s worst offense. Their 103.2 Offensive Rating ranks dead last in the NBA, and their -7.6 Net Rating is 28th in the league. Their 107.7 Points per game ranks 28th, their FG% of 44.5% is 26th, and their 3P% of 29.3% is the worst mark of all teams. The Lakers do most of their damage in the paint, which has been a well known and talked about issue for the Kings. The Lakers are averaging 55.3 Points in the Paint per night, 4th most, and the Kings are allowing 55.6, 3rd most. It will be a good test for the Kings to see if they can make improvements, and not having to worry as much about guarding the perimeter should make guarding inside easier.

A positive in the numbers for the Kings is that the Lakers are allowing 17 Fast Break Points per game, 4th most. The Kings are built to run, and should find their share of easy buckets against the Lakers transition defense that has sputtered early in the season.

The Kings were outrebounded 42 – 24 by the Cavs on Wednesday. The Lakers though, are actually getting outrebounded worse than the Kings. They lose the Rebound battle by an average of 4 boards per night, 28th in the league. The Kings are outrebounded by an average of 2.2 a night, which is good for 20th. Add in the fact that LeBron, who averages 8.8 rebounds per contest, and the Kings should look to win the rebound battle for just the 4th time this year.

Another area where the Kings should have the advantage is with their bench. The Kings bench is averaging 39.5 Points a night, 5th most of all teams, and the Lakers are sitting at 20th with 32.5. With LeBron, Thomas Bryant, and Dennis Schroder ruled out, Lonnie Walker questionable, and Anthony Davis probable, the Lakers bench will be called on to do even more, which bodes well for the Kings. For the Kings bench, Malik Monk has found his groove. Over his last 4 games, he’s averaging 18 Points on 50/44/92.9% shooting splits with 5.3 Assists to go along with the scoring. He’s been a joy to watch and brings a palpable energy to the floor, and is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

One final trend that is showing more and more is how well the Kings are getting to the line. They are shooting 25.3 Free Throws a night, 5th most in the NBA, and have risen drastically in FT%. They now sit at 77.1%, 16th in the league. Fox, Sabonis, and Barnes are all in the top 40 in Free Throws per game, and combine for 16.4 a night. It’s great to see them not only get to the line, but capitalize when they do.

Stepping out of the numbers world for a closing; this team just feels fun. I’m enjoying watching them play and I hope you are too. The numbers show that they are doing good things, but the eye test shows it just as much. It feels like they all like each other and are playing for one another. I’m genuinely looking forward to every game, and can’t wait for another one tonight.
