Kings vs. Warriors Preview – By the Numbers
After a short 2-game road trip, the Kings are back home and welcome in the Warriors for a possible first-round matchup preview. Or maybe not? The Kings have a crowded injury report with Fox, Sabonis, Keegan, Monk, Davion, Lyles, and Huerter all listed as questionable. This game can either be a fun preview game, or a fun chance to see some backup players get some run. Either way, let’s see what we can expect from the Kings and Warriors tonight.
Golden State has a bit of a statistical anomaly in the fact that they score the 2nd most Points per game, but have the 11th ranked offense if you go by Offensive Rating. A major part of that difference may come from the fact that they turn the ball over a league high 16.2 times per game. With that many Turnovers, they also give up 19.5 Points off Turnovers per game, 2nd most in the league.
The other anomaly that is most often talked about is the Warriors home road splits. Everyone knows the record difference, 33-8 (.805) at home and 9-30 (.231) on the road, but the number that really stands out to me is what their opponents are shooting from deep based on location. In home games, the Warriors opponents are shooting 33.1% from beyond the arc, right below the Hornets 29th ranked 33.2% 3P% on the season. In away games, Golden State is allowing teams to shoot 40.3% from deep, which is clear and far above the 76ers league leading 38.5% on the season.
That 7.2% difference is by far the largest gap in the league, with the Nuggets, Rockets, and Grizzlies all tied for the 2nd largest home/road 3P% split at 3.9%. For reference to the Kings, Sacramento allows opponents to shoot 37.4% at home and 37.3% on the road. Talk about consistency.
For the Kings tonight, this one seems like it all depends on the result of the Grizzlies – Bucks game that tips off at 5:00. Sacramento still has a slight chance to move up to the 2 seed and could push hard for this game if they see an opening. Either way, enjoy the fact that the Kings may be resting players to get ready for the playoffs. I think we are all used to them resting only to try and lose to get better draft position by game 81, so I’ll take this scenario any day
