The Brooklyn Nets’ first loss of the 2020-21 season appears to have come with a loss for the remainder of the season, as well.
The team confirmed Monday afternoon that Spencer Dinwiddie suffered a partially torn ACL in his right knee in Sunday’s loss to the Hornets, and while he is reportedly likely to miss the remainder of the season, the Nets only said that "further updates will be issued following surgery, which is scheduled to take place next week."
Dinwiddie, who was a starter alongside Joe Harris and Kyrie Irving in the Nets’ backcourt over their first three games, planted awkwardly on a play early in the third quarter of Sunday’s game and went down clutching his knee.
He was helped to the bench before being brought back to the locker room for further tests, and the team quickly ruled him out with what was termed a right knee strain.
Dinwiddie is expected to make a full recovery prior to the 2021-22 season, and will now likely pick up the $12.3 million player option that made up the final year of the three-year deal he signed with Brooklyn before last season.
Dinwiddie had 20 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists in 64 minutes over 2 ½ games this season. His role may now fall to Caris LeVert, who has averaged 13.3 points over the first three games as the leader of the second unit, and/or could open more opportunities for Tyler Johnson or defensive specialist Bruce Brown to earn more minutes in the rotation.
