HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Texans star quarterback Deshaun Watson is candid about what the organization needs to move into a new era.
Both the general manager and head coach positions are vacant. With the disappointing 4-12 season over, the Texans can put all of their focus on filling those positions and building toward the future.
Watson said last week that he would immediately begin focusing on the 2021 season. After Sunday's loss to the Titans, I asked Watson what qualities he'd like to see in new leadership.
“Man, it just starts with the energy and just the foundation of this program. There's no real foundation ... Everyone sees it. Everyone knows that," Watson said. "Got to have a guy that can come in and stand strong, stand ten toes down and, hey, this is the way it's going to go and this is the way we're going to win. That's what we need. It's kind of just up in the air right now. That's what I'm looking forward to, some disciplined responsibility and some good fun energy that cares about winning championships and winning games, but at the same time is coming in to work each and every day regardless.”
Watson was asked this again Monday and spoke even more about the need for structure.
"We just need a whole culture shift," he said. "We just need new energy. We need discipline. We need structure. We need a leader so we can follow that leader as players. That's what we need. We've gotta have the love of not just the game of football because that's what we do, but the love for the people and the people in this organization.
"We all got to be on the same page. There's too many different minds. Too many different ideas and too many people thinking that they have this power and it's not like that. We need someone to stand tall and this is who we follow and this is the way it go."
That last paragraph is interesting because it is unclear who Watson is talking about when he refers to "too many different minds" and ideas and people thinking they have power.
Watson volunteered that he spoke with Texans CEO and chairman Cal McNair after the game. Watson said he recommended keeping offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, who called plays for the first time this season.
