It’s always crucial for quarterbacks to enjoy strong relationships with members of their offensive line, considering they wouldn’t be able to succeed without their protection. But the bond between Josh Allen and his offensive line goes even further.
They’re one big family.
Veteran Buffalo Bills offensive tackle Dion Dawkins joined the “Howard and Jeremy Show" on Friday and talked about the special connection he and his cohorts share with Allen.
“It’s just a relationship with Josh that we all have,” he said. “That just shows how different this Buffalo team is, and we’re all a huge brotherhood, and care for one another. It’s a special unit and a special team, and we can have the whole band together, with Josh being the lead singer, and us playing drums.”
Allen excelled behind Buffalo’s line last season, completing nearly 70% of his passes for 4,544 yards and 37 touchdowns. His stellar performance earned him runner-up honors in the MVP race behind only Aaron Rodgers.
This season, Dawkins is hoping to join Allen in the Pro Bowl. The 2017 second round pick is always available, playing in all 64 games in his first four NFL seasons. He signed a four-year extension that could be worth up to $60 million before last season.
Still, Dawkins says he’s going to enjoy his summer before ramping back up for training camp. After an AFC Championship run, his body and mind needs to recover — along with everybody else’s.
“I am not ready to get back. Nobody is ready yet,” he said. “We have to rest and dissect and take this huge step back so we can take this huge step forward just on a normal level of resting your mind and your body. Getting that far in a season, nobody on that team has got there, so this is further than anybody has ever really played. For us to get that far, it’s going to take us a little more time to restart and get back on that track.”
Don’t get Dawkins wrong: he’s ready for the season. There’s an excitement around the team he’s never experienced before.
That’s why he wants to make sure he’s ready to play. This year, the Bills are hoping to go even further. They’ll need to be at full strength.
“Seeing people happy and excited about the Buffalo Bills is something we were brought to Buffalo to do,” he said. “Just to see the people happy and excited and giving us their positive energy is something special.”
