The Buffalo Sabres used a power play goal in the second period, and back-to-back goals in the third to defeat the New Jersey Devils, 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The two teams combined for 27 shots on goal in the opening frame, but neither team could find the back of the net. Linus Ullmark stopped all 15 New Jersey shots on goal, while the Sabres recorded 12 shots on Mackenzie Blackwood.

Jacob Bryson made his NHL debut in Tuesday night's game. The defenseman led the team in ice-time in the opening period with over seven minutes on eight shifts. Bryson hit the post, narrowlying missing a goal in the first period.

Buffalo had the first power play chance of the night when Michael McLeod was penalized for tripping. The Sabres recorded just one shot on goal on the man advantage, but hit the post twice with two high quality scoring chances.

New Jersey went to the power play shortly after killing off McLeod's minor. Bryson was called for tripping just seconds after Buffalo's power play expired, but the Sabres managed to kill it off.

Buffalo's second power play produced the game's first goal. Victor Olofsson scored his sixth power play goal and seventh overall, to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead. The goal came with Sami Vatanen in the penalty box for tripping. Rasmus Dahlin and Sam Reinhart assisted on the game's first goal.

Buffalo extended the lead to 3-0 thanks to a pair of goals less than two minutes apart early in the third period.

Rasmus Asplund scored his first goal of the season after knocking the puck out of the air following a Reinhart shot from the slot. Reinhart and Jack Eichel were given the assists on Buffalo's second goal that came just over five minutes into the period.

Dylan Cozens would add his third goal of the season just 1:34 later to make it 3-0 in favor of Buffalo.

The goal came as the Sabres recorded 30 shots on Blackwood, continuing to put pressure on New Jersey's netminder.

Ullmark lost his shut out bid with just seconds to go in regulation after a frantic finish for New Jersey. Nikita Gusev broke up the shut out with under 30 seconds to go to make it a 3-1 Buffalo lead. The Sabres netminder finished the game with 41 saves on 42 shots faced.

Cody Eakin scored an empty net goal as the game was expiring to clinch the 4-1 win on the road. For Eakin, it was his first goal as a member of the Sabres.
