Growing up, people had more pride. They had pride not only in themselves, but what they looked like, their appearance. My mother was very big on social appearances growing up. So when a rare Sunday trip to church reminded my mother we needed new dress shoes, she wasn't about to send us in our sneakers. She had other thoughts instead!
