The trek will see the four-time GRAMMY nominee perform shows in 30 different cities across three months including Chicago, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and more. As she geared up for her first show at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids (1/21), Ballerini caught up with US99’s Scotty Kay to reflect on the journey to her first arena tour and what she’s looking forward to most about the trek.
“It’s been such a journey and I think every artist’s journey is so different,” she said of her progress towards playing arenas. “There have been so many times in the last decade where I’ve been like, ‘Am I ever going to be able to make that jump from the big room?’”
While hard work, determination and her loyal fan base have all played a large part in her next big step, Ballerini also believes her new-found, more vulnerable approach to music has as well. Within the last few years Ballerini has reached even more fans after releasing particularly vulnerable albums; Rolling Up the Welcome Mat and PATTERNS. “I feel like I’ve unlocked this new level of honesty with my songwriting where I’m not really scared to say anything anymore,” she shared. “It’s definitely a double-edged sword, but I think that’s definitely allowed this new level of connection with people.”
Her connection to crowds far and wide is undeniable and the support she’s gotten from her army of loyal fans for this tour has been indisputable. From song requests for the deep cuts to selling out arenas in record time, Ballerini’s fans are present and proud. All of it has the 31-year-old reflecting on earlier times in her career when she played at much lower-profile venues like shoe stores and steakhouses.
“I remember I played an acoustic set in a Texas Roadhouse, that definitely hit different,” she laughed as she reflected on the importance of those early shows. “They’re all such good memories and there were no sets that were skipped and I think that’s what makes everything so sweet. Going from the Texas Roadhouse to the local bar and then the club and then the theatre. I’ve gotten to see every side of each of these cities, which is really special.”
