In a recent interview with NME, Moroney shared that Musgraves’ songwriting, specifically on 2013’s, Same Trailer Different Park, was a huge inspiration to her. She credits Musgraves’ craft as “the reason I wanted to write songs.”
“Anything with Kacey next to it freaks me out, because she’s the reason I wanted to write songs,” Moroney said, responding to her album, Am I Okay? being the third most popular female Country album this year. It lands behind Beyoncè’s Cowboy Carter and Musgraves’ Deeper Well. “She’s such a smart writer and I fell in love with it.”
After catching the inspiration, and an injury that had her wheelchair bound (allowing plenty of time to practice her guitar), Moroney found songwriting came rather natural to her. From performing in front of her college sorority sisters to now, some of the biggest stages in Country music, Moroney has claimed her very own lane with her self-proclaimed “Emo Cowgirl Country” style.
Centered around “having horrible taste in men,” Moroney proves her ability to relate to millions as she tours the world promoting her sophomore album, Am I Okay?, which she admits she wrote in about two days. “It’s all over the board of being a human in your twenties,” she said of the project. “There’s something for everyone; there are love songs, hopeful songs, heartbreak songs, in the middle songs, songs about my friends and grief and loss.”
While her songs might seem specific, Moroney said fans have found their own way to connect, which is exactly what she hopes for when writing. “I tell the stories but then people make them their own”.
