The first of what’s to come to follow up her 2022 sophomore studio album Traumazine, Megan Thee Stallion brings her venomous bite as she serves up her slithering new single, “Cobra.”

“Just as a snake sheds his skin, we must shed our past, over and over again,” Megan opens the track a la Rocky Horror vibes before getting into the hard-hitting first verse. Slithering out of a giant cobra covered in slime and not very much else, Megan raps, “Breaking down and I had the whole world watching / But the worst part is really who watch me / Every night I cried / I almost died and nobody close tried to stop me.”

“Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance,” Meg shared in Instagram post ahead of the song’s release read. “They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats. Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within.”

The accompanying Douglas Bernardt directed, jungle-themed music video is, of course, full of more slithering snake imagery. However, the track isn’t just about Megan shedding her skin, but also sharing the truth, about her mental state. With revealing lyrics like, "I'm sittin' in a dark room thinkin’ / Probably why I always end up drinkin’ / Yes, I'm very depressed / How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist?” Megan clues us in to what she’s been silently going through the past year.

Between parting ways with her label, the Tory Lanez drama, and what seems like a situation in which she caught her (we assume) ex-boyfriend Pardi Fontaine cheating based off these lyrics, "Pulled up, caught him cheatin' / Gettin' his d*** s***ed in the same spot I'm sleepin’," Megan has surely been through it. But, “just as a snake sheds his skin, we must shed our past, over and over again.”
