It's looking like the Dallas County jail system will be getting a major facelift.
According to WFAA, Dallas County Commissioners have met recently to discuss the possibility of opening of opening a new jail and criminal court facility to replace the "aging and outdated" Lew Sterrett Justice Center.
Commissioner Andy Sommerman said, "We need a new facility. What we've got is too small and outdated."
The need for a new facility goes all the way back to April 2024, when Dallas county's Jail Facilities Advisory Committee recommended building a new jail facility, rather than renovating Lew Sterrett.
The committee found that a new facility, which would include 7,200 beds, a new detention facility, a new courthouse, and parking, would cost approximately $5.3 billion.
The land that Lew Sterrett currently resides would most likely be sold, but any sale would likely have to wait until a new jail is built.
