There is a new member of the Dallas Zoo family, as the first look of their baby hippo was shared on social media this week. The new hippo was born back in October and is named “Kalo.” Now, for the first time visitors can see the adorable hippo in action at the Simmons Hippo Outpost.
On Tuesday, the Dallas Zoo’s new hippo, Kalo, joined her mother, Boipelo, in their public habitat for the first time. The hippo is named after one of the K9 patrol dogs at Conservation Lower Zambezi based in Zambia, according to CBS DFW. In her short amount of time in the new habitat, Kalo has already played on the beach and in the 120,000-gallon pool.

While the baby hippo has remained close to her mother, she is already exploring the habitat and learning a new "roll" every few days. Guests will be able to get a glimpse of the hippo in the coming weeks, pending suitable weather and the mother’s comfort level. Before you know it, the hippo will be all grown up.
