The stars were out Sunday night for the 2023 Grammys, as some of the biggest names in music were up for awards. However, while many were happy to see their favorite artists go home with a Grammy, here in DFW the focus was on Pamela Dawson of DeSoto High School. That’s because the school’s choir director won the 2023 Grammy Music Educator Award.

Pamela Dawson has been the choir director at DeSoto High School for the last 16 years, and on Sunday she was finally honored for her contributions. After being nominated for the Music Educator Award two of the last three years, Dawson was selected for the award this year. According to WFAA, the award recognizes educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the music education field.

“What I spoke about what I pour into my kids, especially this year dealing with mental health, was a deciding factor in me getting this award. I am so honored that the Grammy Museum and The Recording Academy for finding me worthy of receiving this honor,” said Dawson. While the choir director has led the program to multiple competition wins around the world over the years, this award is definitely something special.
