There is one weekend every summer where a lull in professional sports forces fans to watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee instead. Luckily, those in DFW have a new reason to watch this year, as one of our own will be competing in the spelling bee. DISD’s Lindsey Roberts recently spelled her way to the final round, where she will compete against other students for the national title.

Lindsey Roberts is an eighth grader at W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy, and she will be the only contestant representing Dallas ISD in the nationwide spelling championship. Roberts correctly spelled words such as avifauna, iatrogenic and kookaburra during regionals to make it into the finals. “She’s very communicative and vocal and a very active reader, and even helps me spell words sometimes,” said Jesus Rodriguez, who teaches eighth grade Reading Language Arts at Greiner.

According to WFAA, Roberts will compete in the final event in Washington D.C. on June 2. She will even have her entire trip paid for by the Dallas Sports Commission and Southwest Airlines. Hopefully Roberts is ready to bring the trophy home to DFW.
