People often claim goldfish only have a three second memory span. However, a group of scientists recently set out to prove that is just a myth. They successfully taught of group of goldfish how to operate a motorized vehicle, and the videos have both shocked and terrified the internet.

A group of behavioral scientists from Ben-Gurion University in Israel constructed a “fish operated vehicle” that the goldfish were able to operate with the help of a camera that allowed the vehicle to move in the direction they swam. The researchers gave the fish a pellet of food every time they successfully hit their target with the vehicle. “The fish were tasked to “drive” the vehicle towards a visual target in the terrestrial environment, which was observable through the walls of the tank. Indeed, the goldfish were able to explore the terrestrial environment, all while avoiding dead-ends and correcting inaccuracies,” said Ronen Segev.
