The New York Times crossword puzzle is part of the daily routine for millions of Americans.  No doubt there is a great sense of accomplishment when one completes the entire puzzle.

You can imagine the delight of Texans everywhere when they read one of the clues for a recent puzzle: "Tex-Mex condiment."  We're talking Tex-Mex?  If that isn't a bonafide gimme answer we're not sure what is.

However, you can imagine the dismay when it turns out the answer to that clue was…" Taco Sauce."  Now we can't be 100% sure about everyone's Tex-Mex recipes, but how many of those recipes have ever called for Taco Sauce?!

C. Andrew Doyle, a bishop of the Texas Episcopal Diocese, and avid New York Times crossword puzzle player, took umbrage with this clue and answer, and penned an open letter to the Times on behalf of all Texans.

In his letter, Doyle gave a brief history of Tex-Mex cuisine before admonishing the Times for suggesting that Taco Sauce is used on real Tex-Mex.  "In America, it's like what they put on In-N-Out Burger. It's never put on tacos," he explained.

Per the Dallas Morning News, Doyle offered that ff the desired answer was taco sauce, the appropriate clue should have been "Cali-Mex condiment," contending that the ONLY correct answer for Tex-Mex condiment is salsa.  "For neither is salsa created by Taco Bell or from California," he wrote, before signing "Faithfully yours."
