The State Fair of Texas is celebrating a special birthday on Tuesday, as Big Tex is turning 70 years old. The larger than life statue has been a part of the annual Texas tradition since 1952, and this year the fair will celebrate his birthday with some special giveaways for attendees. The festivities begin at 10:30 A.M. and go on all throughout the day.
Before he was Big Tex, the symbol of the State Fair of Texas was used as a massive Santa statue in Navarro County. However, for just $750, fair officials were able to bring him to Fair Park, where he has remained for every State Fair since 1952. The statue has gone through some changes over the years, but has been become one of the most beloved figures in DFW.
Now, to celebrate the iconic birthday, the State Fair of Texas will be giving away free food and drinks, along with some other discounts and giveaways all throughout the day. According to Dallas Morning News, the festivities will begin at 10:30 A.M. with a giant birthday cake cutting at Big Tex Circle. Check out the rest of today’s birthday party schedule below.
