The first day of school is always exciting, but sometimes students aren’t quite ready to let go of their summer break. Just about every excuse to get out a school has been attempted, but rarely do parents give in on day one of the school year. One Texas parents took things a step further this week, battling an alligator in his driveway to make sure his daughter got to her first day of school.

When Mike Trinh’s daughter came inside their Missouri City, Texas home to say an alligator was in the driveway, he thought his daughter was just trying to get out of her first day of middle school. However, the father was stunned when he saw the reptile outside waiting for him. Without thinking, Trinh tossed a towel over the alligator’s head to calm it down and took his daughter to school.

When Trinh returned home, the gator was still waiting, so he took care of the situation by pinning its head with his knee, then mounting it with its jaw shut. “All my years watching Steve Irwin, I figured I can deal with any wildlife as long as it ain’t a stingray,” said Trinh. According to Fort Worth Star Telegram, the father took the gator to a nearby lake to release it back in the wild. After this incident any excuse his daughter tries to get out of school won’t work.
