The state of Texas is sitting on a literal gold mind of cash from people who just don't realize they're missing it.

According to KUT News, there is a pot of almost $9 million full of what the state calls "unclaimed property," which includes uncashed paychecks, unclaimed refunds and deposits, and money and safe deposit contents from dormant bank accounts.

The 73 million unclaimed properties totaling $8.8 billion is currently sitting in the state's General Revenue Fund which will eventually be used for the state's budget.

However, you can check and see if any of this unclaimed property is yours at ClaimItTexas.gov.

Reportedly, the rate at which the Texas Comptroller's office is collecting money is outpacing the rate the office is returning it.

According to Bryant Clayton, the assistant director of the Unclaimed Property Division, in fiscal year 2023, the state collected $1.1 billion, but returned only about a third of that, around $340 million.
