Texas lottery sets all-time record with $8.297 billion in sales for 2022

This is the 12th year in a row the record has been broken

Anytime someone purchases a lottery ticket, they believe at some point that they are about to become rich. Of course, for most the dream never comes true, but that hasn't stopped people form trying. In fact, the Texas Lottery recently announced they have broken their all-time sales record this year, with $8.297 billion in lottery tickets sold.

On Monday, the Texas Lottery announced that for the twelfth year in a row, Texans have set a record for lottery ticket sales. The $8.297 billion tickets sold from Sept. 4, 2021 and Aug. 31, 2022 surpassed last year's number by $189.7 million. Scratch tickets alone made $6.727 billion during Fiscal Year 2022, according to Valley Central.

While the number of tickets sold is larger than ever, the Texas Lottery paid out a record amount of wins too this year, handing out $5.662 billion in payments to prize winners. All the tickets sold this year helped raise $1.998 billion for Texas education and veterans. Hopefully next year a few less people are convinced they are about to become millionaires.
