Every fisherman has a story about their biggest catch, but for some reason the fish seems to get bigger every time they tell it. For one fisherman in Texas, most people probably won’t believe him the first time he tells his biggest catch story, but unlike the others there’s no reason to embellish his story. The spear fisherman recently hauled in a fish that weighed over 130 pounds and may end up being a world record.

Braden Sherron was doing some fishing in a private boat at Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf recently when he caught something no one has ever seen before. The freediving fisherman speared a 137lb cubera snapper that may end up shattering both state and world records. According to Fort Worth Star Telegram, the previous Texas record was 131 pounds, while the world record was 124 pounds. It is unknown why the International Game Fish Association doesn’t recognize the previous Texas record.

Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf shared photos of the catch on social media that quickly went viral. Cubera snappers are “highly prized by game fishermen and commercial fisheries throughout the Caribbean and South Atlantic,” claims the University of Florida. Hopefully this massive fish brings in a hefty reward for the Texas fisherman.
