Internet retail giant Amazon is reversing course on a previous mandate about in-person vs. remote work.
Previously, they had declared that most employees would have to put in face time in the office at least three days a week when they reopen their workplace shuttered by the COVID pandemic in January.
Now though, Amazon has said many of their corporate and tech workers may continue to work remotely indefinitely, with the stipulation that they make themselves available to come into the office when deemed necessary.
The post was signed by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, according to the Seattle Times.
"We expect that there will be teams that continue working mostly remotely, others that will work some combination of remotely and in the office, and still others that will decide customers are best served having the team work mostly in the office," Jassy wrote.
The new edict only affects about 50,000 of the company’s 1 million employees. The rest work in the fulfillment and transportation divisions shipping out orders and delivering them, work that must be done in-person.
