In his most recent episode of This Little Light, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea and singer and actress Cynthia Erivo talk about their personal journeys from appreciating music, to studying it, and becoming musicians themselves.
LISTEN NOW: Cynthia Erivo and RHCP's Flea have a fascinating talk about their musical journeys
Calling it the “favorite podcast [he’s] ever done,” award-winning bassist Flea praises Erivo’s genuine love for music and her ability to articulate both her journey and motivations. “Music and light and everything that is beautiful about music absolutely pours through her entire being, and you can hear it all in her voice” he attests.
From her perspective, however, Erivo didn’t feel destined to be involved in music by any means, rather, she just simply loved it. “I just recognized it so vividly,” she told Flea, “I’m not even sure that I had decided that I really really wanted to sing or I really wanted to be a musician. I just loved it, loved how I felt when I heard it. And I loved that I was listening to people’s hearts and souls, and I was feeling connected to all of that.”
Every episode of the This Little Light podcast goes to benefit Flea’s non-profit Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. As the two musicians chatted, their experiences in music education naturally came up, and it turns out, Cynthia Erivo had never sung before her high school music teachers suggested it.
“I was in total bliss because I had to use my voice in a totally different way that I didn’t even know I had, but my music teachers happened to just, they knew,” she recalled. “I just remember feeling like there was light everywhere, because I had never experienced this kind of sound coming from my body, I had never experienced hearing the sound in this way. I was gobbling up music and melody wherever I could find it.”
And as Erivo’s career has developed, she’s found more music and melodies than she ever expected, especially given her explosive titular role as Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked movie adaptation.
