If, at first, you don't succeed, recheck your slot machine because you could have won the jackpot and not known it.

Too specific? This was the case for one man who won more than $229,000 in Las Vegas without knowing it.

The winner, Robert Taylor of Arizona, hit the jackpot while playing slots in Las Vegas but didn't know because the machine had a "communications error," according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

In a statement, the gaming board shared that Taylor won the jackpot while playing slots at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but the malfunction "prevented Mr. Taylor and casino personnel from realizing that a progressive jackpot had been won."

The casino confirmed that the jackpot had been won, but it had not been dispensed, the release said. This resulted in the gaming board starting an investigation to find the winner.

Chief of the board's Enforcement Division, James Taylor, shared with NBC News his agency's role in finding the winner and applauded those who identified the issue.

"The Nevada Gaming Control Board is charged with the strict regulation of the gaming industry, the protection of the gaming public, and ensuring that the industry benefits the State of Nevada," James Taylor said. "I commend the agents of the Enforcement Division, particularly Agent Dan Nuqui, for ensuring that the public trust in the gaming industry remains strong by spending countless hours over two weeks to ensure that a patron is awarded winnings owed to him."

Multiple hours of surveillance footage were reviewed in order to find Taylor and award him his winnings. Witnesses were also interviewed along with electronic records and ride-share information being examined by investigators, according to the release.

After a lengthy investigation, Taylor was identified, and on Jan. 28, he was notified that he had won and was scheduled to pick up his jackpot this past weekend.
