Cows roam Chicago-area freeway after crash

One person was critically injured and authorities were wrangling up cattle loose on Interstate 80 after a crash involving a cattle hauler Tuesday in suburban Joliet.

State troopers responded to the three-car crash involving a cattle hauler about 3:40 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80 just east of Houbolt Road, Illinois State Police said.

The driver of the hauler, 51-year-old Bradley Pate of Waynesboro, Virginia was taken to an area hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, state police said. Illinois State Police have charged Pate with a DUI.

Two of the cattle died in the crash and numerous cows and bulls got loose along the highway, according to police. Some of the freed cattle then began to roam into the nearby wooded areas, necessitating them to be wrangled by local farmers on horseback.

The eastbound lanes were closed for nearly six hours. They reopened at around 9:30 p.m.

No other injuries were reported.
