Heading into election night 2024, much remained up in the air as Republicans held a slim majority in the House and Democrats held a slim majority in the Senate.
With several key seats up for grabs, polls had predicted that Republicans would regain control of the Senate while the House remained a toss-up.
Before votes were counted, Republicans held on to 38 seats while Democrats had 28, with the remaining 34 seats up for grabs. In the House, all 435 seats were up for grabs, as terms for members of the House of Representatives last two years, compared to six years for senators.
Among the big names in the Senate that are seeing their terms end in 2025 include Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Rick Scott (R-FL), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and more.
Top races to watch include Cruz’s in Texas, where he is facing off against former NFL player Colin Allred; Arizona, where US Rep. Ruben Gallego (D) is facing off against former gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R); Wisconsin, where incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D) is being challenged by businessman Eric Hovde (R); Michigan, where incumbent Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D) is being challenged by Republican Mike Rogers, and Pennsylvania, where incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D) is being challenged by former official David McCormick (R).
In the House, top races to keep an eye on revolve around big names, like House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
