SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (KNX) – While covering the devastation of the McKinney Fire in a northern California community, a photojournalist made a miraculous discovery.
Jonathan Rivas told KCRA 3 was in Klamath River Saturday morning, filming the damage left by the fires, when he heard a yelp. He initially assumed it was a wildlife creature.
Then, out of the rubble, came the creature…wagging its tail.

“All of a sudden, this little puppy comes and runs up to me,” he recalled.
“I was super shocked to see that come from the rubble there."
Rivas filmed the moment the black and white puppy hurried toward him.
“I am talking to him like I'm talking to my dog, I picked him up, put him in the trunk of my car," Rivas said.
Rivas gave the dog some water before dropping the dog off at a shelter in Yreka. The dog, however, wasn’t at the shelter for long.
After posting the video on social Rivas, he was able to find the dog’s family. Since then, the pooch has been reunited with its family.
