Gunmen flee on Jet Skis after storming five-star resort and executing man on the beach

Vacationers at a five-star resort in Cancun were left distraught this week when a Mexican national was gunned down in broad daylight by two suspects who fled the resort on Jet Skis.

Riviera Maya News reported that the incident occurred at the Riu Caribe at around noon on Wednesday. Police have reported that the fatal shooting is believed to be a targeted attack.

The unidentified victim was approached by at least two gunmen who fired multiple shots at him, police said, the outlet reported.

After they opened fire, the suspects got on their Jet Skis and fled the resort, reports share.

According to Riviera Maya News, the man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was not a guest or employee at the resort.

Video shared by news.com.au appeared to show guests of the resort gathered in the lobby in their swimsuits, having fled the shooting.

On Wednesday, Mexican prosecutors shared that they believed the victim may have been part of the shooting death of a 12-year-old over the summer.

That shooting involved more Jet Ski riding gunmen, who opened fire on a beach, killing the boy while they were trying to take out a rival drug dealer, CBS News reported in July.

The United States State Department currently encourages tourists from the States visiting Mexico to use increased caution while visiting the country.

The State Department has cited a recent rise in “homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery” across Mexico, saying it is “widespread and common.”

“The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted,” the State Department says.
