John Deere recalls thousands of mowers over fire risk

The agricultural machinery company John Deere announced this week that it was recalling thousands of its “ZTrak” Zero Turn Riding Mowers with Kawasaki Engines for overheating and catching on fire.

So far, there have been no injuries reported, but there have been five reports of fires and 26 reports of melting and or smoking, according to the recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The problem in the mowers and engines stems from the voltage regulator that can fail during use or while the mower is being stored.

John Deere sold around 39,000 of the riding mowers from Oct. 2018 through Sept. 2024, ranging in price between $8,000 to $11,500, the CPSC notice shared.

To discover if your mower was recalled, check the serial number located on the right side of the machine near the rear tire. The following are the serial number ranges of the mowers included in this recall:

Model Z720E, with Serial numbers 1TC720E****010001 to 080657

Model Z730M, with Serial numbers 1TC730M****010001 to 080574

Model Z740R, with Serial numbers 1TC740R****010001 to 080462

Model Z760R, with Serial numbers 1TC760R****080001 to 080339

Customers should immediately stop using the recalled mowers and contact an authorized John Deere dealer for a free repair.
