Nonprofit resistance coalition plans ‘day of action’ to support Medicaid

In response to recent federal changes, a group of 35 nonprofit organizations have come together for a day of resistance, as they look to support Medicaid as many fear possible cuts.

The Medicaid Day of Action is being organized by the Michigan Resistance Coalition, a group of over 35 nonprofit organizations and more than 2,000 statewide grassroots activists.

The coalition shared that it is looking to elevate “the voices of Michiganders that have been negatively impacted by the current administration.”

With Congress having passed a budget resolution that the group says cuts “billions” from Medicaid, EBT, the school meal program and other critical services, the coalition is looking to speak out against it.

In a press release, the group took aim at tech billionaire Elon Musk and President Donald Trump for their actions throughout the president’s first month in office.

“Make no mistake about it – our very democracy is at stake as an unelected billionaire asserts control over our government and even the US Treasury,” the statement said. “At the same time, Trump and Musk have pledged to ransack Medicaid that provides critical funding for our communities’ most vulnerable.”

Still, Republicans maintain that they are not looking to cut Medicaid through their wide ranging efforts to restructure the federal government and cut costs.

Late last month, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said that Medicaid is not on the table when it comes to cuts, despite many arguing that the House Energy and Commerce Committee has nowhere else to reduce its budget after discussions around finding at least $880 billion in budget cuts.

“Look, Medicaid has never been on the chopping block,” Johnson said at a press conference. “If you eliminate fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicaid, you’ve got a huge amount of money that you can spend on real priorities for the country.”

The coalition pointed to research from the Michigan League for Public Policy, which highlights that one in five Americans have Medicaid, with some states seeing even more use the program.

Nationally, Medicaid data shows that more than 79 million Americans were enrolled in the state run insurance as of January 2025.

The nonprofit organization KFF has recently released a survey looking to see how Americans feel about potential cuts to Medicaid.

The organization found that only 17% of Americans want to see Medicaid funding decreased, compared to 42% who want its funding increased and 40% who want it to be the same.

Another survey from Hart Research found that 71% of Trump supporters are not in favor of cutting funding through Medicaid.

As things sit, Trump has vowed not to touch Medicaid while making cuts but has said he would find waste or abuse within the program.

“Medicare, Medicaid — none of that stuff is going to be touched,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. “We don’t have to.”
