Popular food boat capsizes and sinks in Florida

Fort Lauderdale’s boating community lost a popular dining staple on Sunday when Jay’s Sandbar Food, a floating restaurant, capsized and sank.

“Upon arrival crews found the iconic Jay’s floating food truck rapidly sinking,” Fort Lauderdale Fire and Rescue said in a statement. “An assessment of the scene indicated that there were no injuries and no immediate hazards to the environment.”

Jay’s owner Jeremy Lycke told CBS Miami that the wake from a passing boat caused the restaurant’s stabilizer pontoon to “snap.” That caused the boat to capsize and sink in less than five minutes.

“I’m devastated of course, but my crew got out safely and nobody got hurt,” Lycke wrote on Facebook. “We will rebuild, somehow, now first, we got to remove her shallow grave.”

Perhaps luckily, the boat sank in just four feet of water, but it still suffered about $85,000 in damages, Lycke told CBS News.

Lycke does plan to salvage and refloat his restaurant and reopen. He currently has a GoFundMe page where supporters can donate to the restaurant's reopening.
