Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) underwent hip surgery early Saturday after she was hospitalized while on a trip to Luxembourg, Germany, a spokesperson shared.
Ian Krager, a spokesperson for the lawmaker, provided an update on Saturday, just a day after she was hospitalized.
“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” Krager said in a statement. “Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg for their excellent care and kindness.”
Pelosi, 84, was on the trip to Germany with a congressional delegation. Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI), who was also on the trip, shared in a post online that Pelosi had fallen on a flight of stairs.
“On the CODEL to honor the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge and the greatest generation that fought it, I was near Mrs. Pelosi when she fell during an official event,” Van Orden shared on X. “It’s not appropriate for me to comment on her medical condition, and I wish her the very best.”
The delegation included 18 lawmakers who were set to take part in observances for the Battle of the Bulge’s 80th anniversary.
Pelosi was transported to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for the surgery.
Last month, the longtime Democratic leader won her 20th term in the House of Representatives.
“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans,” Krager said.
Her office has not commented on the recovery process or when Pelosi will be able to return to the US.
“Sending my best to @SpeakerPelosi and wishing her a speedy recovery,” Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said on X. “We need you healthy and strong as ever!”
