Another Pittsburgh Bridge closed for safety reasons

Another bridge in the City has just closed due to safety concerns.

The City just closed the Herron Avenue Bridge Wednesday morning, citing an abundance of caution after the findings from a consultant and PennDOT.

Barricades and Bridge Closed signs went up this morning, with a posted detour taking drivers through Liberty Avenue and the Bloomfield Bridge.

Mayor Ed Gainey whose term began with the collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge, said in a statement he has never regretted closing a bridge for safety purposes.

“Following emergent findings from the City’s bridge inspection consultant and PennDOT, we are moving quickly to close the Herron Avenue Bridge in the interest of public safety,” said Zack Workman, P.E., Acting Chief Engineer. “Barricades and ‘Bridge Closed’ signage will be in place starting Wednesday. A designated detour route will guide motorists via the Bloomfield Bridge.”

This joins the Panther Hollow and Charles Anderson Bridges in Schenley Park which have been closed.

The Herron Avenue Bridge connects Polish Hill with the Strip District and Bloomfield.
