At least 20, 5-or-more-vehicle accidents reported around Pittsburgh

Tuesday morning was a dangerous commute with numerous accidents reported, especially west of the city.

Icy roads across the region caused many serious accidents near the Airport, Oakmont, Parkway West, Bridgeville and other areas.

A blast of arctic air came through the Pittsburgh area overnight, freezing roads, especially bridge overpasses and off-ramps.

One accident was caught on video showing an SUV crashing and flipping over right at the split with the Parkway West outbound toward I-79 South.

The man that took the video, Ben Boss, tells KDKA Radio’s Marty Griffin several cars had already crashed and after he slid into a car, he got out and got off to the side before a car slammed into him.

That’s when he noticed an SUV coming around the bend.

“He hit the ice and hit the car in front of him and flipped over and then ran into my car that was still on the road,” said Boss, adding the man involved in the accident only suffered minor bumps and bruises.

Boss adds he doesn’t think the person involved in the crash was speeding, but the black ice was impossible to avoid.

Boss was taking the video for insurance purposes when he captured the SUV flipping over.

Another accident Parkway West westbound just after Carnegie with 12 cars involved also snarled traffic for a time with the road reduced to one lane.

AAA traffic reporter Ellen Gamble says it was one of the busiest mornings she can remember.

Accidents were reported near the Westinghouse Bridge, in Oakmont, near the Airport expressway, I-79 South in Bridgeville and other areas.

Ben spoke with an EMT who told him “there were 20 or more, five-or-more car pile-ups around the city.”
