Big news for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. David Zubik is retiring as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh.
The Diocese making that announcement Wednesday morning, saying that Pope Leo XIV accepted Zubik's resignation.
Zubik turned 75-years-old in September, the mandatory retirement age in the Catholic Church.
Zubik will be replaced by Auxiliary Bishop Mark Eckman as the 13th bishop of the diocese.
Eckman has served as Auxiliary Bishop since 2022 and is a longtime parish priest.
He told Larry Richert on the Big K Morning Show this morning that he's learned a lot from his predecessor:
“And I’ve been writing down all sorts of notes during this past week of what I still need to know and learn and figure out, so I have his number on speed dial, so I’m sure I’ll be calling that,” said Eckman.
In a release, Eckman said, “With a grateful and humble heart, I accept this appointment and ask for the prayers of all the faithful. Together, we will continue the mission of Jesus Christ with hope.”
Zubik says he has a wonderful successor.
“I am both grateful and thrilled with this appointment,” Zubik said in a statement. “Bishop Eckman knows the diocese. And we know him as an exceptional pastor, and outstanding administrator – truly an exemplary priest.”
Eckman will be installed on Monday, July 14 during a special mass at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland.
