Pittsburgh-area Congressman pushing for action on cell phones in schools

Currently, there's no definitive national standard for cell phones in schools. A Pittsburgh-area lawmaker wants to change that.

Congressman Chris Deluzio is trying to figure out a plan that can give individual school districts flexibility while addressing the fact that there is a national crisis among children with smart phone and social media addictions.

He says cell phones in schools is a major distraction.

“It seems pretty clear,” Deluzio tells KDKA Radio’s Colin Dunlap. “You know, having the phones on the laps, in the pocket, at the desk, it’s distracting for the kids, distracting for the teachers and we got to do better by these kids.”

Deluzio says adults and lawmakers have a responsibility to support schools so kids can focus on education.

He says that placing your phone in a pouch when you arrive and picking up your phone when your dismissed seems to work for many school districts.

Deluzio recognizes getting something done that works for everyone will be a big challenge, but he will continue to work to get a law in place.
