Electricity prices in Pennsylvania are set to rise for most people between 5 and 12 percent on Sunday.
June 1 is when the new round of rates goes into effect and the increase is due to higher transmission costs caused by heavier demand on the power grid.
The PUC's Nils Hagan-Frederiksen says rising wholesale prices means fewer bargains for customers who shop for a supplier. Essentially, you can shop around, but even those prices will be higher.
“There may be some offers available,” said Hagan-Frederiksen. “It really varies dramatically from utility service area to utility service area.”
So, the best bet is to conserve power.
Even little things like unplugging electronics when you're not home or turning up the thermostat when you're gone can help the savings add up.
Hagen-Frederiksen wholesale prices have been climbing and that’s what’s to blame.
“There’s continued to be upward pressure on the price of natural gas,” he said. “Natural gas is used to generate a substantial amount of our electricity.
So, that is the biggest factor right now in the price changes that we’re seeing.”
