Coming off the heels of announcing a penny-collection program that will give customers double what they bring in and the opening of a standalone pharmacy in Mt. Washington, Giant Eagle is making a $1 million food bank donation.
With many people in the area currently dealing with food insecurity, due to several factors, Giant Eagle says the donation is going to “several food bank partners” across the Pittsburgh-based grocer’s five state footprint.
The donation is being made through the Giant Eagle Foundation
“We are grateful for the steadfast leadership our food bank partners continue to demonstrate amid these extraordinary challenges,” said Bill Artman, Giant Eagle President and CEO. “Through the Giant Eagle Foundation’s $1 million commitment, we join countless others across our communities stepping up in big and small ways to support our neighbors in need.”
Giant Eagle says it will continue to monitor the situation and look for other ways to help in the future.
Customers can also help by donating money to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank when they check out at any Giant Eagle location.
With a continuing federal government shutdown, millions of people across the country are set to lose their SNAP benefits, beginning November 1.
