Groundhog Day 2025: Phil predicts 6 more weeks of winter

The world’s most famous weather predictor Punxsutawney Phil has predicted six more weeks of winter.

The groundhog came out of his home at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and saw his shadow, extending an already cold and snowy winter.

In the 139-year-old tradition of Groundhog Day, Phil has only not seen his shadow 21 times. He didn’t see it last year.

Tens of thousands of people pack the small town of Punxsutawney, celebrating into the night with some people stay up through the festivities.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was in attendance as well.

“It’s humbling to be part of one of the nation’s most inclusive and fun-filled celebrations, where all Americans can come together and simply have a good time,” said Punxsutawney Groundhog Club President Thomas A. Dunkel. “It truly seemed like this was yet again a record-breaking year for Gobbler’s Knob and Punxsutawney. And whatever people think about Phil’s predictions, we can all agree it was another amazing Groundhog Day for the books.”

The annual tradition goes back to 1887 when a group of hunters called “The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club” said that Phil was the “one-and-only weather prognosticating groundhog.”
