Allegheny County could have an $81 million deficit next year. The county executive’s solution is the biggest property tax hike in county history.
Not a good look for someone who passed out raises immediately after taking office but couldn’t say what it would cost.
Sara Innamorato’s 2025 spending plan actually calls for a 3% increase in spending when an immediate spending and hiring freeze with exceptions for critical services is in order. Reasonable people agree a higher millage rate is appropriate after no increases since 2012.
But why not ask property owners to do that over a period of years? And instead of token budget trimming, significant budget cuts are a must at a time when tax revenue is shrinking due to reduced property values.
That’s a big problem Downtown, but better incentives and fewer roadblocks would draw much needed development.
Unfortunately, a vibrant economy doesn't appear to be part of the county executive's agenda.
