The northern lights may be visible in the Pittsburgh-area Thursday night

There’s a chance parts of Southwestern Pennsylvania will get a glimpse of the aurora borealis or Northern Lights Thursday night into Friday.

A G3 geomagnetic storm from the sun is affecting the Earth’s magnetic field.

A G3 is considered a “strong” storm. The system scale goes from 1 to 5 with a G1 considered “minor” and G5 is “severe”.

The way to see the northern light is outside of the metropolitan Pittsburgh area (where there is less light pollution) and to look toward the north.

The darker your surroundings the better and make sure you let your eyes adjust.

Even if you can’t see the aurora borealis with the naked eye, your cell phone camera may be able to pick it up.

AccuWeather is predicting cloud cover of 45 percent, so if the Northern Lights are visible, you should have decent skies.
