Officials remind Pittsburghers not to walk on frozen rivers

Authorities are reminding the public to stay off the frozen rivers.

Record-breaking temperatures over the past couple of days have caused Pittsburgh's three rivers to freeze over.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, ice on the rivers range between 5 and 8 inches thick.

Officials say people should not be walking or sliding over the rivers, but that is exactly what people are seen doing in videos.

So far, there have been no reports of people falling through the ice this week, but emergency crews say falling through can have dangerous and even fatal consequences.

Pittsburgh Public Safety says, "If you see someone or a pet fall through the ice, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue unless it can be done safely from shore using an object like a rope or ladder."

Last week, a man trying to escape police after being accused of theft at an old VA facility walked several miles on the frozen Allegheny River before he was taken into custody.
