PETA's latest protest shocks some outside Pittsburgh supermarket

A group of animal rights activists staged an unusual demonstration outside a local supermarket.

Three activists with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wrapped in plastic, and packed inside replicas of the Styrofoam meat containers used by supermarkets, greeted shoppers around noon for at the East Liberty Whole Foods.

Mason Melito with PETA says they dispute labeling in the store that suggests the meat is humanely obtained, and animals are subjected to various forms of abuse.

“Turkey’s were having their necks stomped on,” said Melito. “They were hit with iron bars and some workers were even simulating sexual acts with turkeys.”

While the location of the protest meant limited interaction with shoppers, Josh of Marshall Shadeland felt PETA is trying to control people by shock.

“The image was gruesome and they were using a human object,” said Josh who added “a lot of people eat meat and it is nutritious.”

The activists conceded they're against any form of eating meat, saying there are enough vegan options to meet nutritional needs.
