Pine-Richland latest district to roll out metal detectors at schools

Pine-Richland is the latest school in the area to roll out metal detectors at its schools.

In a message sent to KDKA Radio, the district says the portable metal detectors will be used when needed based on safety assessments.

The metal detector is called OpenGate and is utilized by other districts in the area, including Plum and Shaler schools.

Administrators will work the Pine-Richland safety committee to determine when and where the metal detectors will be used.

Training for staff and some high school students is scheduled for Friday, September 26.

The district adds that the utilization of the OpenGate system “may or may not be communicated in advance.”

This comes after three students were stabbed at Carrick High School earlier this week.

One Pittsburgh City Council member is creating a committee to discuss security issues in the Pittsburgh Public School system.

The alleged attacker, a 16-year-old student, in the Carrick stabbing was arrested and is being charged as an adult.

One of the victims was last listed in critical condition.
