Prominent former PennDOT spokesman Dick Skrinjar has died.
Skrinjar was a beloved communicator, who worked for two Pittsburgh mayors, and was even the executive producer here at KDKA Radio in the 1970's.
Most recently, Skrinjar worked with District Attorney Stephen Zappala in his office.
His son is long-time Fox Chapel High School basketball coach, Zach Skrinjar. He talked to KDKA Radio about his dad's legacy.
“Someone who loved the city, loved its people, loved his family,” said Zach. “He was an elite communicator and he showed his family, his sons, his wife unconditional love and I think that’s what his legacy will be, is someone who just showed love, every time he was around people.”
Democratic nominee Corey O’Connor says Skrinjar was former Mayor Bob O’Connor’s communications director and he "would do anything for you you."
"When you were his friend, he always looked after you," added O'Connor.
Skrinjar was a young man when he started working with Jack Bogut and through the years, while with PennDOT, he would spar with John Cigna and Fred Honsberger in some of the station’s best radio.
“He took such pride being associated with the people at KDKA and they were always so good to him and those are some of his most cherished memories,” said Zach.
Starting out at KDKA Radio in the early 1970s, Skrinjar worked with PennDOT, Pittsburgh Mayors O’Connor and Ravenstahl and finally with the Allegheny County D.A.’s office.
Zach adds that the biggest fan of Fox Chapel basketball was his father.
Skrinjar was 74.
