Meijer, the latest supermarket chain entering the Pittsburgh market, will open its first store in the Cranberry area.
The Michigan-based chain confirms with KDKA Radio it’s purchased land at Henderson Crossing.
That location is close to the future site of the area’s first new Wegman’s store.
The area’s largest grocery chain, Giant Eagle, also has its headquarters in Cranberry.
The developer is presenting the proposal to the planning and development commission at the end of the month for the Meijer location.
Earlier this week, Meijer confirmed it is acquiring multiple properties in Western PA.
Meijer tells KDKA Radio:
While there is no definitive timeline for the opening of new stores on these properties, we’re excited about the prospect of bringing our quality products and exceptional shopping experience to customers throughout Western Pennsylvania.
Our expansion into this market reflects our commitment to serving more customers with fresh, affordable groceries, one-stop shopping, and outstanding service.
We look forward to introducing ourselves to these communities and are committed to being an active and engaged neighbor.
Meijer was founded 90 years ago in Greenville, Michigan and operates nearly 260 stores, mainly in the Midwest.
In addition to groceries, Meijer also sells electronics, outdoor items, clothing, shoes and more.
The closest Meijer location to Pittsburgh is currently about an hour away in Boardman, Ohio.
The news of Meijer looking at Western PA comes a week after it was reported that East Coast grocery chain Wegmans could be looking at opening a location in the Cranberry area.
