Tornado in Butler Co. confirmed, crews surveying two other locations

UPDATE: The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in Washington County during Thursday afternoon's storms.

Both of the tornadoes in Butler County were classified as EF0s. The first one formed around 4:37 p.m. northwest of Northvue in Center Township with winds at 85 mph. The storm lifted a roof off of a salt shed and it shattered onto the nearby ground.

Officials also found a handful of trees and large branches that were pulled down.

The second tornado also had winds that reached up to 85 mph. Several large limbs were broken off trees in the West Sunbury area.

A tornado ripped the roof off a Butler County salt barn Wednesday afternoon.

National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Surmac tells The Big K Morning show that video they received shows a roof being ripped off a building in Unionville.

It happened right near the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company with cameras on the building capturing the destruction.

Surmac said there are reports of damage in the Finleyville area in Washington County and southern Allegheny County of siding pulled off buildings and uprooted trees.

Another Weather service team will go to those areas as well.

Large amounts of rain came through the area as well.

“Over the last 24 hours, most people have seen anywhere from a half an inch to about an inch of rain but some of these heavier-hit areas, like up in Butler County and then southern Allegheny (County), we’ve seen as much as one and a quarter to one and a half inches of rain,” said Surmac.

Rain is will continue to fall through Thursday with precipitation expected to begin slowing down Friday.

The good news, it should be relatively dry for most of the Memorial Day weekend, into Monday.
