U.S. Steel restarting Battery at Clairton Coke Works months after deadly accident

More than two months after a deadly explosion, a major step forward in getting things back to normal at the Clairton Coke Works.

U.S. Steel says on Thursday afternoon it will restart Battery 14 at the Clairton Coke Works.

It's been on what's called "hot idle" since the end of August, allowing it to be heated as investigators looked for any damage left by the explosion that killed two.

Both US Steel's own investigation and a third-party probe preliminarily determined a valve gave way while it was being cleaned with high pressure water.

That freed flammable coke gas.

The company says it will work closely with the Allegheny County Health Department to monitor emissions controls.

U.S. Steel says Battery 13, also involved in the accident, remains in "hot idle".
